As part of a class titled Making a Documentary I took as an undergrad, I teamed up with a partner, deciding to create a video explaining the rise and flourish of the Lion's Smash group at The College of New Jersey (a subgroup of our college's Competitive Gaming Club focusing on Super Smash Brothers). The group organizes several competitive Super Smash Bros. tournaments and quickly gained standing and status in the collegiate tournament region in the east coast tri-state area of the U.S.
The documentary showcases the latest tournament at the time, The Tundra II and highlights managers from Lion's Smash as well as top players from the college and talks about their experiences from this rapid popularity growth.
To create this video, my partner and I rented Canon DSLR cameras and shot footage of college environments during the Winter (which relates back to the name of the tournament: Tundra) as well as shots of the tournament itself. We took care to also rent out lighting equipment and tripods to balance the cameras during shots and interviews. We made sure to get B-roll footage but also video that matched the script and story that we were trying to tell. Afterwards, we went into Sony Vegas Pro, an advanced video editing program, to edit and piece together the footage and then publish it later on the official Lion's Smash YouTube channel. During editing, I focused on color-correction of the scenes to fit our theme of a cool and chill scene in the Winter.
