September 2015 - May 2019
As an undergrad at The College of New Jersey, I was part of the Competitive Gaming Club's Lion's Smash subgroup, whose goal was to provide affordable opportunities for new and experienced Super Smash Bros. players alike. Throughout each semester we hosted several free and paid tournaments that pitted players to compete for a placing at the top 8 and a chance at top prizes. We helped organize popular collegiate tournaments in the East Coast of the United States with over 200 players in attendance for some of our most popular tournaments.
These events required extensive organization and logistical management. I volunteered as a tournament organizer to transport gaming console set-ups, build and manage the online brackets and facilitate matches throughout the events. I also worked with paying out monetary prizes to players who place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and mediated issues that arise between entrants in events.
To help with facilitating matches, the Lion's Smash group utilizes a website Smash.gg to organize tournaments in every aspect. An example of our administration panel can be seen in the image above.
Our biggest tournament was an event simply called King held on May 5th, 2019. It was a reboot of our King of the Jungle tournament series with an entire rebranding, lots of sponsorships and partnerships, and several top player attendees. We also utilized the space of our campus's Recreational Center to maximize efficient area-space for student vendors, our livestreamed stage (for big tournament battles), and our commentary location. I assisted with the setup of TVs, game consoles, the stage, and assisted with signing up registrants when the event started. Over 230 attendees came.
